Pritchard and Honeycutt's "The Process Approach to Writing Instruction: Examining Its Effectiveness,"
Read through the long history of writing process, my reflection:
The tradition procedural knowledge of teaching involves a linear and prescriptive way: students recall and rehearse the steps, use the process to produce a story and get into groups to share their stories and gain feedback. This is actually the way how I was taught writing and I might use the same way to teach my students. But after reading the research paper, I agree and second the idea of writing is a recursive and complex process which may need the explicit and direct instruction of the teachers. Effective teaching involves both the procedural knowledge and many other strategies to develop and nurture student’s writing: teaching them the prewriting, guiding students revising their paper and in editing grammar mistakes, providing feedback from both the teacher and the peers, and being aware of authentic audience other than classroom teachers. So I believe the best teaching for writing should be a combination of using the both the traditional and “ new” strategies” mentioned in the research. As a teacher who has been taught by the “ old-fashioned” way, it will be a challenge as well as an opportunity for me to apply the new strategies into our classroom. In all, I learn to teach writing and also learn to write, which makes the process to grow with my students in writing meaningful.
